| Erian Press is an independent publisher focused
on publishing the novels of award winning
author, James R. Olson. We believe that traditional
publishing enriches the publisher and does
not give the author a fair share of the profits.
Since the advent of technology has changed
the publishing world, it is now possible
for an independent press to bring outstanding
fiction to the public's attention and share
the profits equally with the author. That
is our dream and our goal. Although it is impossible to predict the future, at this time we have no plans to accept submission of outside manuscripts. Erian Press, founded in November, 2007, is located in Pittsburg, Texas, a small community in the Piney Woods of East Texas. The name is derived by combining the names of my twin sons - 'ERI' from Eric and 'AN' from Andy - creating ERIAN. Over the nearly 35 years that I've been involved in writing and publishing, the industry has changed dramatically because of the emergence of the computer, the Internet, and the improvements in printing technology. In 1973 when my first novel, Ulzana, was published by Houghton Mifflin Company it was still possible to submit manuscripts directly to the traditional, mainstream publishers, with only around 40,000 new titles published each year. It is estimated in 2007 that the number of new titles will approach 200,000. Perhaps because of the vast increase in manuscripts the major publishing houses won't even look at an author's work unless it's submitted via an agent. With such a large number of authors seeking publication it is nearly impossible to interest a reputable agent. However the advances in printing technology have given authors a multitude of additional publishing options. The biggest factor is the evolution of POD or Print On Demand, which makes it possible to economically print a single copy of a book instead of the thousands required to cost effectively produce books on an offset press. With the emergence of a multitude of companies using the POD technology it is now possible for many titles to be printed that would never otherwise have seen the light of day. Unfortunately there are a large number of poorly written POD books that would never have been published under the old system. However, the POD system does allow authors with talent to self-publish. Consequently Erian Press takes advantage of the new technologies and allows me to have total control over my books. It also shortens the time from completion of the manuscript to publication from years to only a couple of months. |
